"True, effective student self-governance, under the advisement of the professional Fraternity and Sorority Life staff, in partnership with advisors and headquarters. "
OUTCOME
By 2020, as a result, in part, of the following F&S Life governance (proactive) and accountability (reactive) activities:
- 100% of the “sponsored and affiliated” CalGreeks Chapters will live up to the requirements outlined in their campus Recognition Agreement;
- 100% of chapter officers will report satisfaction with the features, benefits, and requirements of campus Recognition Agreements and be able to describe and evaluate their chapter’s practice of the four pillars of leadership, friendship, service, and scholarship;
- 100% of members will practice and be able to describe and evaluate their practice of the four pillars of leadership, friendship, service, and scholarship.
F & S functions more like FDA: sets and enforces clear standards; focuses on quality assurance for users; identifies training & education needs; supplies only that training & education that it is uniquely positioned to provide – otherwise refers to other resources for information and training needed for successful application and ongoing approved operations.
Create a joint Greek Conduct Board, with representation by all councils, to hear violations of chapter violations, to be trained jointly by the Center for Student Conduct and Community Standards and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
Task IFC with developing a formalized recruitment system including a registration process and a single bid day, that ensures a quality recruitment experience.
Recognition agreements should be abolished. The agreements require and organization to adhere to all thse requirements in exchange for what? - Cal will "recognize" the group! Very one-sided. Also, who decides on punishments for not living up to a Cal lobsided agreement?
ReplyDeleteIf this calls for the merging or at least cooperation of IFC J-Comm and the Office of Student Conduct, i'm all for it. There's no reason for a chapter or student to be punished twice, and there are many people on the Student Conduct hearing boards that 1) are not Greek, and 2) don't understand how the Greek system works. Many chapters already impose discipline either on themselves or their members that are more readily recognized by a fellow member of the Greek Community.
ReplyDeleteIf there are things we need to do in the agreement then we also need a list of things Cal will do for Greeks. If they can give us that then the agreement is a good thing, kind of like a contract.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the one-sided comments. At heart, its freedom to associate you're being given, which we already have. The goal here should be that associating with the University provides a benefit to each, allowing Cal more control (thus mitigating their risk) and giving Greeks freedoms and privileges over the ordinary student.
ReplyDeletePersonally, IFC recruitment seems to have been working for many, many years, to change it for the sake of conformity seems detrimental. But if you must, begin with a slow buy-in system and let groups chose to move to this new idea on their own.
If the effort is to make the process look more like Sorority recruitment's deadlines and organization, I disagree. Fraternities and Sororities share the same ideals and external structures, but obviously tend to operate highly differently - if anyone is making the argument that if it works for one, it should work for the other, they are severely wrong.
What else should Cal be doing (or should be listed in the recognition agreement) for fraternities and sororities?
