Support - Draft Recommendation # 1

GOAL

"Supporting fraternities and sororities preserves these organizations for future generations of UC Berkeley CalGreeks"

OUTCOME
  1. Create a UC Berkeley Fraternity and Sorority Advisory Board to provide advice, guidance and development of the community. Members could include chapter advisors, house corporations, council officers, community members, parents, faculty and staff.
  2. Increase the number of full-time equivalent staff in the Fraternity and Sorority Life office to five by 2020.
  3. Fund all positions in the Fraternity and Sorority Life office with permanent University funding.
  4. All fraternities and sororities with houses must employ a full-time staff member, older than 25, who will reside in the house, and who will be supervised by the Alumni & Volunteer Board.
  5. Provide a regular forum for volunteer advisors and house corporations to share ideas and best practices (i.e. meetings and/or on-line).
  6. Create a fund from a one-time fee from new members to be used to support the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

  2. why a full time staff member, who pays for this?

  3. Why should we agree to giving you more money in order for you to craft more hoops to jump through?

  4. "All fraternities and sororities with houses must employ a full-time staff member, older than 25, who will reside in the house, and who will be supervised by the Alumni & Volunteer Board."

This will only lead to more people living out of the house and less people joining each fraternity.

  5. To be completely honest, this whole Greek 2020 thing doesn't seem to be realistic. First of all, members of the Greek Community are Adults, responsible for their own decisions and can handle themselves appropriately.

Two. There is no need for the university to waste money on hiring 5 staff to "watch" over the greek system. If anything push more money into the UCPD and increase enforcement and patrol around the community to keep it safer.

Three. Having a 25 year old trained by UCB/etc is not going to happen. Fraternities and Sororities are secret societies based on a strong set of morals/values and having a 25 yr old live in would ruin all the fun of inter-frat secrets/rituals,etc. Also everyone who lives in is 18+, were all adults here, stop trying to parent us.

Four. The UC system during these economic times would be foolish to invest in this completely bogus proposal. This is why

The Greek Community as a whole, I believe I can speak on their behalf, would rather see the university putting more money into our academics and hiring more professors, giving more money to research than hiring a staff to act as "Big Brother" on our housing system.

  6. Why are you asking the Greek Community to hire an "adult" to watch over us, when we are all competent adults who, in the long run, will make better decisions for our respective houses than a hired hand?

And with regards to the one-time fee that would go to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority life, I would like to see an actual estimate of the fee, rather then it being put off until 2020.

  7. Is Cal really going to pay for a house manager? Do other privately owned buildings require a house manager? A property owner should be the only entity that decides how their PRIVATE building should be run.

  8. Create a fund to support Greek Life employees? One would have to assume that Greek Life works in the best interest of the Greek system when we all know that is not the case. An employee is going to work for their employer's best interest so why should Greeks fund a Cal employee who will be looking out for Cal first?

  9. I see no need to increase the staff for the Fraternity and Sorority Life. There is nothing going on in the greek system that needs so many full time workers. I would recommend that we review the staff and reduce the number of workers to help reduce the financial burden on the students in the greek system. University funds are tight, and I would question any university funds going to fund it.
Requiring the houses to hire full time staff is not logical and goes against the university's ideal of diversity. These are houses with members who are Cal students of adult age. It will be very difficult to find staff who are as intelligent and mature as the fraternity and sorority members in the house without having to spend amounts of money on salary that would make joining a house prohibitive for students that are on a budget. So you are saying that only the wealthy can join the fraternity and sorority system. That goes against the ethical ideals of the university and the fraternity and sorority system.
And in the final bullet point, you are going to charge new memebers another fee. Again you are creating an elitist greek system where only the wealthy can join.

  10. If the University is already upping student fees for next semester, adding CalGreeks fees on top of the national and local dues would be crippling to the Greek system. Also, to assume that Greeks do not know how to take care of themselves is absurd. I agree with Falco: form a stronger bond with UCPD and Berkeley Police so they are less concerned with busting Greeks for drinking and more concerned with taking care of real problems like sketch people around our houses and reports of violent crimes in our neighborhoods.

  11. It is simple that, if these measure were put into place, fraternities and sororities will no longer care to be recognized by the university--making the house full-time staff member no longer applicable to fraternities. It would be really apparent that the benefits of being recognized by the university do not outweight the costs.

  12. A live-in house director is such a ludicrously bad idea that it would prevent a large number of people from joining the Greek community in the first place. Why implement an unnecessary change that will cripple the growth of our community?

If enough people haven't expressed their displeasure with the ideas outlined here, please add mine. These proposals are costly and counterintuitive to the ideals of Greek Life.
